Cody Barrett’s ten-acre desert property was east of Yuma off Interstate Eight near Fortuna Hills. It was secluded, which provided a lot of privacy. He had rushed home after the job was done. The way Cody viewed it, a fire was one thing, but murder was another, and that made him nervous. On his way home, his mind raced, and he had thoughts about getting arrested by the same men who had hired him. Cody decided he needed to pack. The murdering arsonist believed crossing into Mexico for an extended vacation was better than sitting around, waiting to see if he would be arrested or killed. I’m a loose end, he thought as he tossed his duffle bag into the back seat of his truck.

“Where you going?”

Cody spun around and found Detective Younger with his hand resting on the butt of his gun.

Cody Barrett had heard the rumors about Detective Younger being a ruthless man people never wanted to cross. “I just thought I should get out of here until things cool off a little,” he said as he stepped closer to the driver’s door of his truck, where his pistol sat on the seat.

Younger stepped closer. “What happened?” he asked as he continued slowly moving toward the man.

Cody looked right, up, and back at Younger and shrugged his shoulders. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, what happened?” Younger demanded, his voice laced with a sharp edge of anger. He positioned himself squarely between Cody and his gun.

Cody glanced at the detective and back at his garage. “I did what the sheriff paid me to do,” he answered and decided the garage was his escape route.

Younger shook his head. “No, you were paid to burn some evidence, not to kill someone.”

“It was an accident. No one was supposed to be there. She freaked out and tried to run. I stopped her. She hit her head on the desk. Like I said, it was an accident,” he explained.

Detective Younger aggressively stepped forward. “No! You screwed up!”

Cody knew there was no sense in talking to the detective. He turned and ran toward the garage while Younger pulled his gun and started shooting. Cody ducked as bullets flew by his head. He dove behind his dune buggy and hid between two toolboxes.

“Come out!” the detective shouted.

Cody stayed where he was and desperately searched for some type of weapon. Then on the back of the buggy, he spotted his three-foot-long metal breaker bar. He reached out and secured it in his hands.

“Where are you, Cody? C’mon out. I just want to talk about the accident,” Younger called. He was angry over Lisa’s death, and he wanted to exact some revenge.

“No. You come and get me!” Cody shouted and ran for the door leading into the house.

The detective took aim and fired three times, hitting the door frame twice and Cody once.

The wounded man fell to the floor inside, with the door slamming shut behind him. He staggered to his feet, ran into the living room
